This and all previous bans are necessary because of the selfishness of smokers. If they had an ounce of empathy with non smokers all the pub bans and of course this latest one would not be necessary. This has only come in because we cannot rely on smokers not to gas their own children in the car!

No, it wont be pointless. It will alert some to the dangers and they wont do it so job done.
There are still many drink drivers, should we repeal the DD law?
ymg...sometimes you use phrases that leave me puzzled ! Is a "chimney" Pub what I might call a back-street Pub, or perhaps one on a housing estate ...ie just an ordinary Pub ?

In Britain today, only about 28% of adults still smoke. That figure would, of course fluctuate, between different parts of the country and in different social classes, but its clear that the vast majority of people now do not smoke. I now know very few people who smoke but from my experience, even most smokers agree that anti-smoking legislation has been a good thing on the whole.

But isn't it sad that in 2014 we still have some people that are so uneducated that they think its OK to trap their kids in smoke-filled cars ?

DrFilth...as a CAMRA Member, I am worried by the growing trend in Pub closures, but its caused be many different reasons. Perhaps we are just changing our social habits and do other things with our spare time, instead of going to the Pub ?

I hate to mention Wetherspoons again (!) but they seem to be thriving, where other Pubs are closing. You keep hearing that the smoking in public places laws are closing Pubs, but Wetherspoons are subject to exactly the same laws as everybody else. Perhaps other Pubs should look at what Wetherspoons are doing right, and try to emulate it ?

Agree 100% with this ban.
mikey, a 'chimneys' pub just means that it has a lot of houses around it rather than being a destination pub, which relies on car trade.

I agree completely with you re Wetherspoons. Cheap food, good beer, nice and clean, modern (and usually near a bookies!)
Thanks zacs !
Totally agree with TTT, if people could controls their habits and not include others in their addiction then as said there would be no need to have this ban or many others. People are selfish and some really don't give a ttttossss for even their own children being subjected to their filthy habits (my take on smoking).
And dunnitall those are exactly the people who won't give a toss about some low level law that will rarely be enforced. And YMB it is pointless, I'd wager there is not a single smoker who is not already aware of the dangers of smoking with children in the car. Either they have the moral quality to not do it or they don't.
I agree with it- i just think it's a shame people have to be told. I was a smoker for many years, but never inside or in the car. The only place i ever smoked in, was the pub. I do know one mum who chain-smokes in her house and car with three young children. I won't take my son to her house because of it (he also has asthma). I think there is a lot of denial with her. Do what you like to your own lungs, but you can't inflict it on others. And i think the majority of smokers are considerate. It just takes a few to give them a bad name.
