I've tried growing an avocado by the old method of suspending seed in water, and
achieved some roots and shoot and leaves, but then it dies.
Anyone been more successful?

put it in a put (small) of damp earth bury the seed about 2/3. Put whole thing in a sealed clear plastic bag then put in the airing cupboard. Check daily, once it has a shoot, put on a warm light windowsill. I used to grow them but hate eating avocados and so now I don't bother.
Did they fruit Woof ?
no, they never do in the Uk unless you have very specialist conditions. TBH they are rather boring as plants, leggy with green leaves and nothing else. Peanuts are more fun.
orange and lemon pips are good too also shove a lump of ginger root in a pot of compost makes a much nicer house plant
stick 3 cocktail sticks in seed, a small tumbler of water sit seed in tumbler so bottom is just in water the cocktail sticks will stop the seed going right in. after a few days weeks it will start to sprout 7 times out of 10
I've never had any success, but am determind to have another go using a heat pad under it this time.... watch this space :-)
I got as far as you, cryptic - about a foot tall, then it died.
Have grown a few using the cocktail stick method. Skin the stone first and soak for a few days before suspending. Plant leaving 1/3 above soil when shoot is about 1/2 inch. Keep warmish.
I have sprouted a mango pip but it is kind of static. Doesn't seem to grow any more leaves, just sits there. I agree that avocados are interesting to sprout but then a bit boring afterwards - and they just want to grow up and up.
Drop an over-ripe kiwi fruit in pot of compost on sunny windowsill, dont let soil dry. Theyre rampant & fruit in Nov/Dec.
