My 5 year old daughter is mixed race brit/african. She has lots of lovely hair but I'm finding more and more difficult to manage. She can never wear her hair down as it becomes a matted mess in an hour. I've heard I shouldn't use relaxer as she is too young. I've tried leave-in conditioners but I need something specific for her hair type. Any suggestions for a good product please?

This site seems interesting, though it doesn't name specific products, sadly.

I loved the term BritAfrican. Best wishes to you and your daughter.

wow. Thanks Drusilla...I nave saved the first site to my favourites...never knew it existed..!

Hi I kno this is coming quite late, but I hope this helps.

Though not mixed race, my mother relaxed my hair when I was 6. The question of relaxing childrens hair is really a personal one, I know many people who have relaxed their childrens hair from the age of 5.

The problem was in the old days, there was only one type of relaxer and it was strong and was not recommended for children, however products have evolved over the years.

There are really good products for children to relax there hair which is not as strong as the adult relaxer. In fact I use the childrens relaxer on my hair cause i dont like the straight look. If you just want to soften your childs hair, you can use the childrens relaxer and instead of leaving it for the recommended 10 or 20mins you can just leave it in for 5-8 mins, just halve whatever time the product tells you to leave it in for. That will soften and not straighten the curls.

Heres a link to a product made by L'Oreal USA, which you can get it the Uk.

My daughter is mixed race and i had the same problem, we have tried a few products but now have stuck with Dark and Lovely moisturising oil. It comes in a dark pibk bottle and you can also get it in a spray, but also can i mention that using the same make of shampoo and conditioner seems to help. The cream is quite cheap at about 2.99 and last a while
www.naturalfrizz.co.uk sells haircare products for mixed race amd multi-ethnic hair.
