Television Sound Distorted

Just lately the sound has become very distorted on our television but it doesn't happen on all programmes, the music is especially bad and we have to turn the volume right down. we have been told this is because of the hd channels have different levels than ordinary channels so unless we have a hd box this will happen. I can't see this somehow. does any one know the reason or is it our telly going bonkers.
