I am covering maternity leave at the company I work for and when I started the job I was issued with a temporary contract to remain in employment until June but it states 'dates to be finalised'. No notice period is specified in this contract but as I assume this is a temporary contract I need to give a minimum of 1 weeks notice?

My partner works in London and we have been asked to re-locate. I am in the process of looking for another job and as soon as an offer is confirmed I will hand in my notice. Is one week acceptable if I need to start another job asap? This is playing on my mind and I feel really guilty as it will be leaving them in the lurch! However I am not happy where I work and my employers are quite ruthless!

Please let me know your thoughts.

Many thanks.

any job you have been in for less than a year you need only give notice of 1 week unlesss the contract states otherwise. hope this helps and good luck with all

If there is nothing in your contract, and as this is a temporary position, you could effectively just leave without notice. However, if you are relying on them for a reference, I would give a minimum of one week notice up to as much as you can, although this is still no guarantee that they will give you a reference.

If you don't need a reference from them, I would just walk out when you are ready. As you said, they are a ruthless company so would probably do the same to you if they wanted to get rid of you.
