Sorry to be cynical, but why didn't the girl borrow the £2 from her mother at the time, and offer to pay the store then?

Surprise surprise, the store finds her and she is in for a gift, and John Lewis gets free advertising!!!

She's 5 years old, she might have been scared that she'd broken the bauble, when she got home she may have felt guilty.
