My cat is about as normal as cats can be and he is eating as usual and is his usual self generally. But this last week he keeps going into the kitchen and staring I between the cupboards and the fridge. I assumed we may have a rodent or similar. So my husband and I have pulled of all the baseboards (kitchen door closed) and pulled out fridge etc. hoovered and washed all floor space in case something got spilt and that's the reason for the weird behaviour. Have found no evidence of a mouse or anything else.

Any suggestions? I'm concerned that there is something wrong with my cat rather than we have an extra 'pet'. Cat is only 4 yrs old and in good health, neutered.

What would you do?

Thanks GF

Our cat does a similar thing: sits and stares intently at the gap between the arm of the sofa and the seat cushion before repeatedly shoving a paw in there. After a few minutes he gets bored and wanders off. We've double checked... there is nothing there.

I thought it was maybe a quirk but he has been at it continuously for a week.
Our last cat literally 'camped' out in our kitchen for about 10 days once. Never left the kitchen stool and stared at the fridge freezer 24/7, leaving the kitchen only for toilet breaks and food.

At the end of 10 days the score was Cat = 6 , Mouse = 0

Took us ages to out find where they were coming in, a very small hole in brickwork. Obviously, the cat could hear them.
I think your first thought is likely to be correct
I wonder if he did actually see something go in there (that has now gone). My cats will do the same if I've taken something off them, they still look for it in the same place.

I thought the same Prudie - if ever he finds a spider and has eaten it. He will go back again and again to the same spot hoping for another to spawn!
Our cats do it all the time. I think they do it to make you look as well!
dont be fooled, there's nowt there!

He knows full well you'll be spooked, and the longer you continue looking the more bonus points he'll get. He's laughing behind his paws at you.

mice can and do cling onto the inside works of fridges - kind of climb up the bits of tubing etc underneath. Cat can still hear its tiny mousey heartbeat and is just waiting.
At any rate your cats sound likely to catch a rodent if there is one there - our little elderly black cat would die of fright if she ever encountered anything like that!
I wonder if he heard a spider scratching around?
I think the scent from your cat would be enough of a deterrent for keeping mice at bay. That was the reason we got our cat, we lived next to a pub and the cellars backed onto our living room, and we found mice coming in from there under the gas fire we set traps etc. but nothing worked until we got a cat (a lovely chap) we now have five cats and never had any more trouble with mice, spiders or flies!
