When I was growing up 30 ish years ago my parents made all our food from scratch and my mum used to set aside half a day the weekends for cleaning. I am currently staying with them and have noticed that they eat a lot more of convenience food eg microwave potatoes, boil in the bag rice and so on. Their house is spotless but I notice they use packaged wipes clean things. Do you reckon it's just because these things exist now, or people just want an easier life as they get older?

The poem by John Updike was covered in school, but our children (at the time) didn't know what a Bendix was................

• BENDIX
This porthole overlooks a sea
Forever falling from the sky,
The water inextricably
Involved with buttons, suds, and dye.

Like bits of shrapnel, shards of foam
Fly heavenward; a bedsheet heaves,
A stocking wrestles with a comb,
And cotten angels wave their sleeves.

The boiling purgatorial tide
Revolves our dreary shorts and slips,
While Mother cooly bakes beside
Her little jugged apocalypse.

when I explained what a "Bendix" was, it all fell into place.
Life gets harder as you get older ! I tell my knees that every time I'm on the stairs !
Having peeled potatoes, baked etc all my life I can't tell what joy it gives me to be able cut a few corners. I still haven't resorted to too many convenience foods yet but I'm tempted!
And having just wrapped up Xmas gifts for the people who have to help me at home I discover I seem to have 5 staff!
Blimey!
Not lazier, just tireder.
TheWinner, excellent ! Younger people, and those who were not as rich as Americans post-war, would not know the washing machine but they might know the "Bendix" on a car, it being part of the starting mechanism
I don't cook much at all now...not laziness but if I can garden and sew I won't cook.

However I don't think I compromise on good food. I have a wonderful farm shop nearby which uses local produce...much of it free range and I like that... and I know where everything I buy comes from.
They prepare meals on site and buy in meals from local farmers so I can buy good, tasty, prepared meals for one to stock my freezer and with the odd dash of wine and a little titivating I can eat well....☺
For me I'm not sure this is even possible...
Get on that bike, young man!!
