African land snails have different tastes (as you have found out!) but staple foods are lettuce, cucumber and apples.

Other favourites include spinach, courgettes, sweet corn, avocados, mangos, strawberries, papaya and melon.

For carbohydrates provide occasional porridge oats, bran, wholemeal bread or a moistened dog biscuit!

They should also be given something for calcium intake such as a cuttlefish to suck on (just like you would give your budgie!) This calcium ensures that the shell grows at the correct rate and is nice and hard.

It is also said that they are also fond of the occasional drop of beer. Not too much, as you'll end up with an alcoholic or pickled snail!

Mine like the round lettuce (outside leaves only) and cucumber and if I give them anything else they eat a little then leave it. They did eat quite a bit of corn on the cob for Christmas dinner. Occasionally a bit of banana too.

Don't forget to keep him sprayed to provide moisture. If not he will dry out and 'shut down' growing a sort of film over the entrance. Spraying with luke warm water will bring him back to life. I spray the sides of my tank and they seem to like sliding up and down to get the water.

Don't they make wonderful pets - so peaceful and relaxing after a stressful day.
