I want to find a cross section map of the mountains between one town and another (in Germany), the sort you see on each stage of a bike race such as the Tour de France. These are not taken from a straight line as the crow flies but follow the roads taken using contour information plus distance.
Are these hand produced, or can they be computer generated ? I have been looking if there is a tool to do this but haven't found anything.

Khandro, if you can figure your way through this, it will (apparently) create one using google earth.

You can make a big straight line out of lots of little ones

Thanks. By an amazing coincidence straight after I posted I went out to play 9 holes of golf, and was partnered with a geologist, I asked her, she told me I need 'Magic Maps' which does exactly this, but costs. She has the professional software and will lend it to me tomorrow. Sounds a great idea, she says you enter any number of towns, villages or co-ordinates and it gives you the profile to scale. If interested, I'll keep you posted.
