"'These offences are so serious that in each of your cases only an immediate custodial sentence can be justified.'

Maundrell was jailed for 27 months and Bennett received a 20-month sentence"

so serious and thats all they get !?.

looking at those id pics, doesnt look like theyve been hardly touched..mores the pity, shame he didnt batter them
Absolutely, I bet he was worried about a custodial sentence for himself if he hurt the poor muggers though
And with Parole and a liberal parole board out by easter no doubt.
The quoted words amount to a set cliche used by judges. They have to explain why, for example, someone with no previous is being jailed immediately or why alternative sentences have been rejected. So they say 'so serious' even though the robbery was what we joklngly call "aggravated begging", rather than a planned robbery with use of weapons and serious injury, the kind that gets you 5 years as a starting point.
Another non-story from the Mail.

It's identical to another one they quoted where muggers attacked some men dressed as women, to mug them, and the men turned out to be cage fighters in drag for a stag party, with obvious results.

It helps Mail readers feel a little bit better about themselves, seeing what they love to perceive as 'rough justice' - sad really.
Best part:

[i]The court heard how Mr Hawkins saw two men loitering in the unlit car park when Maundrell shouted 'Oi mate, what’s the time? I’m not from Swindon' and then grabbed his arm.[i]

Is Swindon in a different time zone???

"what they love to perceive as 'rough justice'

which in some instances will serve as more of a lesson than a lenient sentence

whats going to make them think twice in future, the thought of a good kicking or the thought of a short stay, full board all bills payed etc at one of her majesties finest hostelrys with all modern conveniences
baz - actually, neither.

You are looking at this from the perspective of someone with a mind of his own who thinks ahead and understands that actions have consequences, and can learn from a simple mistake, and not repeat it.

People like these two individuals simply react to what happens to them, they don't think ahead, they probably don't think at all.

It would be great to think that either the violence they received, or the incarceration would turn them away from crime, but it is highly unlikely.

If they had the level of intelligence to understand and learn from their esxperiences, they wouldn't have committed the crime in the first place.
Yea, I liked the line about the time Sp, and the bit where one of these clowns shouted "'I’ve got a gun, I’ve got a gun,' to which the victim replied 'Well get it out and shoot'. Not a good day for these creatures.
God isnt this lucky this didnt occur in Downing St - on video !

The victim wd have been arrested [and charged] with terrorism after the Police had sworn er blind he ( and not the mugger) had said, OK you plebs ! I've got a bomb!
And then there was this well thought out defence:

He (Bennett) was arrested soon after and found with a lock knife in his pocket.

Bennett denied possessing a bladed article but was found guilty at trial.
