Sadly same old, same old. Another tail of woe and the relevant authorities failing to collectively do their jobs on a daily and regular basis.

But, as ever, lessons have doubtless been learned.....

More like lessons have been noted and duly filed in the trash can.

Until we are allowed to make people responsible in the public sector and fire those who are not without them running off to the ECHR this will continue.

Based on a limited insight based on daughter working with Social Services for a while there seemed to be some fundamental issues (generalisation alert):

1. Impossible case-load
2. Lots of reasons to sit in front of computer filling out forms instead of going out to see people; no doubt connected with (1.)
3. Social workers who genuinely cared about helping people baled out; because it was all so frustrating and best left to people who preferred to do (2.)

As Sky News speak to the relevant authorities there are a lot of apologies, plenty of hand-wringing and sonbre faces yet no one feels the need to resign.
If, on a daily basis I failed to carry out the basics in my job patients would be at serious risk, I would expect to lose my job for gross negligence and might fully expect a criminal prosecution to ensue.
Why are we hearing these tales of gross ineptitude on a monthly, almost weekly basis without the appropriate remedial action and repercussions?

Do you think it's because for most people the entire area of Social Services work is just something unpleasant and untidy? My daughter seemed to deal mostly with mental health issues, drug dependency, the elderly confused and destitute, and families do dysfunctional you wouldn't know where to start.

Perhaps most of us just wish it wasn't necessary at all, but as it is, just want someone to magically deal with it and keep it away from us?

Classic public sector I'm afraid, recruited from the guardian because they cannot get a proper job. Think the job exists so they have a job rather than the function itself. The job doesn't pay enough to get anyone beyond socialogy students who only do sociology because it's the easiest degree. Shall I go on?

Zeuhl, I thin all most people want is for people to be responsible for their actions. This does not seem to be the case in the SS.

I have had personal dealing both good and bad with the service, a lot of people work in it and I suspect the proportion of bad apples is small. but it is tha same as most public sectors, teachers for example, the majority are tarred with the same brush as the minority of those that simply don't care and cannot be fired like in the real world.

YMB - you're right of course

I was just wondering, why that seems not to happen in SS. Whether for most people 'the too hard light comes on' - whereas, for example, in Hospital care (which has its own issues of course) at least we might be motivated hold people to account by the idea that we or a loved one could be affected sometime

What beggars belief is that his mother even expressed surprise at the authorities allowing her to have custody of him when she fully expected him to be taken from her.

Mind boggling incredulity at the dereliction of duty by all concerned.

When students continually fail to learn they have to go back and revise for another exam.

It seems that once agian leasons haven't been learned. When will they realise that they are in the wrong jobs?
