what sort of noise? Can you feel it through the steering? Does it vary with steering? How is the steering generally?
If it's a non-metallic noise, one common cause is the undershield, a protective covering for the lower part of the engine.

Its like a scratching noise...nothing felt via steering wheel ...the 1st garage suggested diff noise ...but if the car is going down hill out of gear the noise is still there.
Do you have any service history, when was the engine oil and filter last changed, could be a long time ago.
Water pump on its way out perhaps? I'm in the market for one of these motors myself. Anything else wrong?
