I read about 12 years ago, and in condensed form, a novel about a journey up a Chines River. I can't remember much detail, but it was very descriptive and 'Road-Book'-like, and had details such as the delays caused when the boatman had to waid for rapids to bee at the exace right height to be able to pass. I would love to find it and read it again.

Google River Town by Peter Hessler. I only know because I have a friend who loves anything Chinese and another friend bought her this book once. It may be the one.
Question Author
I found and read the book. It was John Hersey's 'A Single Pebble.'
