Sometimes when I am online and trying to open a web page or download an attachment my computer is extremely slow. I have a broadband connection with a speed of 2.3 Mbpps. My harddrive is in good order with only 17.6GB of space used and 75.4GB of free space. I regularly clean my C drive by running a Disc Cleanup and I keep my Recycle Bin empty. I also regularly check if my hard drive needs to be Defragged. Why do I get slow response times and is there anything I can do to improve?

Have you checked you computer for ad-ware, spyware, tojans, etc.? These can cause your computer to respond slowly when on the internet. Does your computer respond slowly when you're not connected as well?

Hi birdie1971 I have Microsoft Antispyware which runs daily and I also run it periodically myself. My antivirus software is up to date also and I run a full system scan every two or three days. I have only noticed slow response times when I am logged on to the internet.
GK2005 -

I bought and regularly updated a top of the range anti-spyware programme that was given all sorts of accolades in the tech press.

I had much the same problem as yourself.

I downloaded an excellent free utility called
'Spybot search and destroy'.
I ran it and found 67 spyware installations (which it removed for me) - three of them were trojans.

Don't trust to one anti-spy programme.
You can run Spybot as and when needed - just shut down your Microsoft anti-spyware when you run spybot -
and obviously - keep all your such like utilities updated for the latest threats!

Hope this helps.

Hi, you should bear in mind that most home broadband connections are shared with many users, this is called the contention ratio, this might be the cause of your problem because if some users are downloading huge files at the same time as you are working it will slow your access down a lot.
see this for info on how this works.

Could be a corrupt cached temp internet file or registry entry.

Try CCleaner from here http://www.ccleaner.com/ It's free, very easy to use and has been used by many on other PC forums. The download is on the bottom right of the webpage.

Also try Rgseeker from http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm again this is free, works well and has been used by many

Confab

Sorry the download for CCleaner is on the bottom left.

Also ad-Aware is good from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Again it's free and does an exellent job of removing spyware etc
