Frozen Error Message On Laptop.

On my laptop I had a blue screen appear on which there was white script which more or less said "we are sorry Windows has experienced a problem and will now shut down to save damaging your computer".

There was more technical jargon on the screen explaining different actions to take, but I could not shut the computer down because no keys responded, it was just frozen, I just had to wait for the batteries to run down, I then plugged it into the mains and switch the computer on and it started up perfectly.

Could anyone please tell me if they have experienced anything like this, and what did they do?

Why did you wait for the battery to run down? it would surely have the same effect by just removing then replacing the battery.
Fairly standard Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD), the power key if pressed and held 'should' have worked ok or removing the battery. On restarting did the laptop come up in safe mode or just restart ok? 99 times out of a hundred it's a one-off and nothing to worry about, if it happens again either take a photo of the screen or write down the messages and post again.
I would have forced a shut-down by holding my finger on the power button.

Thank you all for your answers,

Fitzer this is the message I got.

A problem has been detected and windows has shut down your computer.

Driver_IRQL_NOT_Less_Or_Equal.
If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen. Restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed, if this is a new installation ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any Windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced start up options, and then select safe mode.

AOG as per the msg, have you installed any new hardware or updated any software, if it doesn't happen again I really wouldn't worry about it, it sounds as if a device driver had got its knickers in a twist.

No I haven't installed any recent hard ware or up dated any soft ware, in fact I don't use this laptop very often.

What would you suggest I do if it does happen again?
Cross that bridge when/if it comes to it AOG, personally, unless it starts to happen frequently I wouldn't worry, the time and effort spent in trying to find the root cause is greater than doing the reboot via the 'press and hold poser key' or 'remove battery' methods rather than wait for the battery to run down.
From your screen dump

avgtdix.sys = file for AVG product.

It's a driver file of some type for AVG and it's probably damaged (which is why it's now causing problems).

I would uninstall AVG...initate chkdsk /r command...reboot...let chkdsk /r execute...install AV when system boots

As it says, if it's the first time ignore, if not then reinstall the drivers for AVG, (IMHO).
