I'm having problems playing CD's on my computer, windows media player, iTunes and the my computer do not recognise that there is a CD in there?

When I put a CD in it makes the noise like it is reading the disc but nothing happens.

Any ideas as to what the problem is?

Try clicking on my computer with the disc in the drive. see if the disc name is there. if it is, right click it and select auto play. Then select your program.
sorry lynda_m i missed the my computer part of your question.

I'm afraid that CD drives don't last forever and can pack up without warning - it might be time to swap it for a DVD writer. However, you can try one thing. Right-click on My Computer and go to Properties. Click on Hardware then Device manager. Find your CD drive and completely remove/uninstall it. Shut down Windows, restart and let Windows find your CD drive again. If that doesn't work then it might be time to splash out!

(This can also be done from Control Panel, System, Device Manager)

I've tried uninstalling it, restarting then putting a CD in but still nothing.

I find it hard to beleive that its the actual drive as the laptop is less than 12 months old, I'll have to try and take it back to the shop I think
