Fifty years ago I carved a sculpture in Carrara marble weighing about one and a half hundredweight, and at that time I was able lift it onto and off the bench. This morning I tried to move it and was unable to lift it, I can only assume it has somehow increased in weight. Can anyone explain this phenomena or had similar experiences?

That must be it.
you obviously fed it too much

Is your storage area damp,
could it have absorbed water?
;o)
Cus yer getting old Khandro.
...and I don't suppose you are any weaker, 50 years on ?
Well it would certainly explain why a lot of old buildings in my village are sinking....
It says here it IS porous, so that could explain it. . . .Carrara marble is one of the most recognized natural building materials in use today. Quarried in the mountains around the province of Carrara, Italy, this gray-and-white stone is used for tile, countertops, tabletops and decorative statues around the world. Like all marble, Carrara is soft and porous and requires care to help maintain its surface texture and beauty. Because Carrara is a light-colored stone, it may show stains and dirt more easily than other types of marble, making it even more important to practice good maintenance. With the right care, Carrara marble can last for years.

Marble is porous I think so maybe the answer.
You posted while I was typing Marjin sorry

Well, my twelve stones have got heavier in the past few years.
In another 50 years you wont be able to see it, does that mean it will have disappeared? After your recent readings of the works of scientists you must surely understand the difference between objectivity and subjectivity.
If you take it to the Moon - it will definitely weight less
well known phenomenon. As you age, heavy things get heavier, print gets more blurry, a mile gets longer and young people get worse behaved.
Woofgang, in my experience, light things get heavier too, These low energy bulbs are much heavier than the incandescent variety.
And the floor seems further away !
//well known phenomenon//
Same as Hubby says - all his shirts have shrunk hanging in the wardrobe! ;)
Can't possibly be to do with getting weaker: as time goes on one gets stronger. For example when I was a youth I had something I could not even bend. Now at my age I can tie a knot in it !
a fire poker? OG :-)
