what's worth more to Britain - a good strong relationship with Spain, or an insane insistence to hang on to this anachronistic quasi-colony?

Can't read the article, emmie :(
baz...off topic, as usual. Back to your usual rant. This has nothing whatsoever to do with the current situation in Gib.
sorry, let me have another look
The flight restrictions would be nothing new, when we lived on the Rock, flights flew down west of Spain, turned in over the Bay following the demarcation line, dropping quickly and turning in sharply for the landing! Alton Towers charge good money for a ride like that! If they continue with their sabre rattling, the simplest solution would be firstly to fire all the Spaniards who work on Gib and see how their population like that.

Spain must go further in increasing the flexibility of its labour market to put a dent in its 26% unemployment rate, the International Monetary Fund said.

The government should give companies and employees more ways to opt out of collective wage agreements and reduce the variety of contracts, the IMF said in report about the country released Friday. Those measures may help lower the jobless rate to about 18% by the end of the decade, the Washington-based lender said.

Such a shift “would require a significant improvement in labour-market dynamics,” the IMF said.
When will Spain relinquish their territories in North Africa ?

Gib is our gateway to the Med, onto Mid & Far East. If Spain controlled the Med mouth (with their African holdings) shipping thru Med could be held to ransome.
it won't happen...
"what's worth more to Britain - a good strong relationship with Spain, or an insane insistence to hang on to this anachronistic quasi-colony? " - works both ways mushroom and I'd say the Spanish are in far more cack than us at the moment - What's worth more to Spain - a good strong relationship with Britain or an insane insistance to obtain a colony that only geography connects us with?
"Back to your usual rant"

wheres the rant ?
or as usual its just something you dont agree with/like/doesnt match your rabid leftie opinions so you roll out your usual stock garbage
if you dont like it then jog on, i couldnt give a toss what you think
they are definitely in more cack than us, and that is saying something, not to mention the fact that the British abroad and there are plenty keep some of their businesses going, and those who flock to Spain for their holidays
There must be enough Brits and Spanish Gibraltar workers on the Costa Del Sol to have a referendum and leave Spain and become part of South West England.
plenty of Spanish people and those of Spanish descent live in Britain.
should we annex Cornwall, come on DT, and give it to them...
thought not.
Spain have adopted similar tactics before, I seem to recall. I am more interested in the timing of this latest action, and what has prompted it. Is it just one of their periodic attempts to highlight what they regard as an injustice, or are their some negotiations going on somewhere that they believe that can use this created issue as leverage?
is it a diversionary tactic away from their obvious financial woes, i suspect that is more to the case.
It's that time of year - peak holiday season when they can cause the most disruption. A lot of holidaymakers go to Gib for the day when they visit Spain - lots of coach trips etc.

It's the workers that commute to Gibraltar every day that I feel sorry for.
Gib cigs are half the price of Spain; we aint giving that up ;)

"......The latest tensions come after the British territory began work on an artificial reef, which Spain claims infringes the rights of its fishermen....."

Oooh I luv that quote - lets build a mini airport aka HK - lol

As em says, it won't happen: it would be impractical, probably illegal, and hugely unpopular with everyone in Gibraltar AND La Linea
The argument still rumbles on, it seems.

C4 have put together a pretty good overview, setting the context quite well i think;
