Watching old 'Who wants to be a millionaire' programmes on cable I saw the Major was one of the contestants. He didn't get into the hot seat on that occasion. His wife was on soon after and did win 32K. She mentioned that her brother had won the same amount on an earlier show. I also noticed a would-be contestant called, 'Tecwin', on another edition of the show. That's a rare enough name and he could well have been the same chap who turned up later with a very bad cough.
Could these people serve as an example of the wisdom of the old saying, 'Be careful what you wish for...'?

did he cop a million, didn't think it was that much.
I remember the coughing one. He was caught out and didn't get the money?
Question Author
He did but never got to spend any of it.
Cough, and cough cough! Don't remember the details; was it 'cough' for yes and 'cough cough' for no? Anyway, this became quite a saying in London. If someone said something doubtfully, they would get the answer 'cough'.
ok

I think the major would muse aloud over the questions. "Is it A? Or perhaps, B? Then again it might be C. Or even D". A helpful cough would sound from the audience at the right moment.
A plan masterful in its simplicity.
I think the lady (?) in the chair read out each alternative answer and he coughed when she read out the correct one. Not sure how he knew the answers.
Question Author
The major was in the chair, his wife, and another contestant, helped with the throat clearing.
Ah. Ok. Hard to remember exactly now
Charles Ingram insisted his innocence.

I must say it was the funniest thing I'd seen in a long time. Still chuckle when I think about it.
But how did the cougher know the answers?? Was he able to google them from phone or what??
Question Author
There was a committee of 3 answering the questions. Between them they managed.
