I dont know exactly what you call them. But some websites give you 2 words to type in ( usually unreadable to me anyway) for security reasons. You know the sort I mean, surely. Is it just me that has to ask about half dozen times for the passwords to be changed before I can make any sense of the letters. why do they do this and why do they have to be the unusual print and almost overlapping of letters and not just normal format ??

It's a security thing to make sure you are not a computer. On some you can play the letters on the audio facility that they provide.
capcha codes.
I hate them too
Ditto.
They are supposed to be unreadable by computers as they are images and not ascii or any other text code. They are a bl00dy nuisance.

thanks all. Just googled Captcha Codes and got onto Wiki and Im still none to wiser. I sometimes give up on a website when I have to input these things so perhaps Im losing out on something but, hey ho, Im only human.
I hate them too, often stare trying to decide whether it's a number, a letter, upper or lower case etc. Ironically I guess they are generated by a computer.
If you want to check that the response is not from a robot, it is far easier to ask for a simple addition, such as " put down the sum of 18 and five", which I have recently been asked to do.

what answer did you get atalanta LOL
don't know if it works or not but have read that zooming in on the page can make the captcha more readable
Try listening to the audio when available. It's even harder to understand than the letters/ numbers !!
They're called Capchas, it's a security measure, and you can usually click on a link to hear them rather than try to read them.
What I meant was that the audio quality is a really poor robotic voice that is hard to understand..
