What is the origin of the surname "Slaughter"?

I think it is job related....slaughterman.
It's probably derived from the old English slohtre, meaning a muddy place. This in turn moves to a place of killing being described as slohtre, meaning a place soaked in blood, and so on until in middle English slaughter becomes the act of killing.
