In the UK we have a history of "gold plating" EU directives. I must look in the Guardian "Situations Vacant" next week. I can see each local authority ready to recruit "Olive Oil compliance managers" (£55k + benefits); "Olive Oil area directors" (£105k + car + relocation allowance + healthcare) and the local councillors ready to appoint an Olive Oil "cabinet member" who has to undertake frequent "fact finding" trips to soutrhern Europe to see how they do all things Olive Oil.

Can you see the anarchical Italians taking the slightest notice of this nonsense? We should ignore it along with the rest of these idiotic edicts.
When the no-smoking ban came in, a friend (a smoker) and I went into a bar in rural France, he asked if there was a special place he could smoke, the patron waved his hand, and to general amusement said, "par tout!". I've not heard of any prosecutions since in that area.

Yes, Khandro, there was an old bar in Antibes which had notices on the walls; the usual one about 'suppressing drunkeness', one about spitting, and one I couldn't quite read. When I got close I could see it was for 'no smoking'; hard to read because it was brown with nicotine stains and the room was smoke-filled. An old experiment that failed! Present day France has been rather more observant; my friend was stopped in Paris because the table was inside but her chair at it was outside on the terrrace, a typically French nicety; but the attitude is still pretty relaxed.

The politicians may leave a lot to be desired, but we should not blame them for everything, they too go to restaurants and will find this stupid. It is really up to the restaurateurs and their customers to be more creative in flouting silly rules just like other Europeans do. Can you see PC Plod coming into Annabel's and arresting Andrew Neill for dunking his bread in a bowl of unlabelled olive oil?

no but it will give the petty little councils another excuse (not that they need excuses) to create jobs for inspectors to go round anonymously and monitor that they are towing the line

"it is clear that it cannot attract consumer support,"
"As a consequence, I am withdrawing the proposition."
So, are there any other EU lunacies that "cannot attract consumer support" ?
