Any opinions on the types of career opportunities available in call centres and the likely wages/salary?

No personal experience, but people I know advise that the job is pretty cut-throat, usually sales target-based, so if you don't perform, you don't stay very long. They often pay minimum wage, and then use bonus incentives to get you to work for your money. If you have the right kind of approach, and a thick skin, you can rise up the career ladder, but it certainly isn't for everyone. I'm always suspcious of any employment sector that alwasy has vacancies - if it's that good, why do so many people leave and leave spaces to be filled?

I know that Vodafone is recruiting for their call centre in my area... it's customer service, not sales, so there's no commission... the starting salary is abour �14,000 full time.

They're awful! Vile, terrible! The turnover of staff is unbelievable. It's so cut throat that most call centres hire agency staff because it's easier to sack them. And you might think that talking on the phone to people is easy and laid back, it's actually very stressful.

i could only stick it for 6 months and that was a long time compared to some of the staff where i worked. they do tend to hire agency staff because they can dismiss them quickly and easily. target based work is very demanding and when your pay depends on it, it can be very stressful. i would say call cantre work is just a job, not really a place for career progression.
