I think the firstcow was killed by Johns enemy who wants to buy his farm (Ritter/Rutter or similar).

With John away the farm will surely fail.

Agree it was a bit grim and a bit pedestrian too. Seems like a 4 or 6 hour show expanded to 8.

I'm entirely sure is my answer, but I am enjoying the good acting. We have such good TV actors in Britain today. Maxine Peake deserves some award or other in the next BAFTAS. The little lad that plays Bert could mirror the whole world in those big dark eyes of his. John Simm is his usual best.

I'm still not quite sure who Peggy was, who wrists Bert had to cut !
