Is the upstairs phone connected via a wall socket or a wireless connection?
Is your Caps Lock stuck on (it makes your question difficult to read)

sorry about that the phone is plugged into the wall socket
Try swapping the phones over, i.e. plug the upstairs one into the downstairs socket, and vice versa. That might indicate if one of the phones is faulty.

thanks will do that now and will let u know the results
I'm not sure I've come across a fixed line phone that needs to be registering.

I'm inclined to, first of all, suspect the phone itself. If you plug it into the main one downstairs is it still permanently registering or is it ok ? Trying to work out if the issue is the phone or the wall socket/connection.

If it is the phone, then you need to repair/replace it.

If it is the socket, did BT put it in for you or did a third party do it ? If BT then you may have a claim to a free repair, but you'd need to check, obviously. If a third party then BT won't be interested and you'd need to get someone to check out the connections.

Hi no joy still says register I rang bt and the charge to come out and look is £99. which I really cannot afford
Question Author
Before bt repaired the land line it worked fine so maybe it could be their fault
If you have plugged the upstairs phone into the main socket and it is still saying "registering", then it looks like the upstairs phone is faulty.
When you say that the upstairs one is plugged into a wall socket do you mean an electric socket or a BT phone socket?
I found this website. Might be of some help:

an electric socket
The fault will be with the thing that still says "registering". Either the handset or the wall socket/connection.

Any idea why it is trying to 'register' anyway ? It sounds more like a wireless link trying to register with a base unit, to me.
Ah yes. That will just be the power then. The problem is with the wireless link from the upstairs one to the base thing you plug into the telephone socket downstairs. I think you may need to get the pair of phones looked at/repaired. (Or replaced.)
I think that you may have to re register the upstairs phone to the downstairs phone, i.e. link them together, have a look at the upstairs phone and try to find where it says register to base then follow the instructions.
