Proper toning often involves weights (of various kinds, not just free weights) but also using those weights in the right way - can you get an instructor at the gym to help you make up a programme based on what you want to tone and show you how to use the appropriate weights to best effect?

Any exercise will help you to become fitter.

I have never used the gym, very nervous!
Don't be nervous. Everyone there was nervous on their first visit too.
Many gyms do an induction for new users and have one of the staff help you get a programme sorted if you want it. That said, a lot of the newer no contract less frills gyms might not - I've not been in one so I'm not sure.

Maybe even look at some personal training sessions, learn proper techniques as doing things property is very important as you could end up working away for not much benefit.

Swimming is good for toning too and your gym may have toning classes you could go to.

Don't worry, everyone there had a first time :)
Snap tenrec :)
LOL Jenna!
one day of jogging and one day at the gym wont help
You would do better spending half an hour at the gym 3 times a week, than spending a day in the gym.
Cardio wise it's also about getting your heartrate up to the point where you are burning off calories then maintaining it. Classes are good for that, I used to love ones like dance and step when I was more mobile and went to the gym.

A lot of the machines have programmes. I used to do one on the cross trainer. I could barely do 2 minutes without feeling like I was going to pass out initially but gently working up I'd hit a level then it'd even out and I could keep going for ages - would often do 50mins to an hour fine.
