A dry riser is a component of a fire suppression system, consisting of a vertical pipe with an external access point through which water can be pumped to individual floors in the event of fire.

It carries water only when it`s needed.
As opposed to a 'Wet Riser' which is permanently full of water (like your domestic supply).
