At one time, advert themes were just called 'Theme from Milk Tray advert' or 'Cadbury's Flake theme'. Nowadays they all seem to use tracks by bands. Why so? Don't advertising companies have themes written specially for their adverts any more? Do they have brainstorming sessions and say things like 'Hey! I heard this great track on such-and-such a CD which we could use? Why so?

The simple answer to this is that it cost a lot to commision a piece of music from a talented musician but there are LOADS of bands out there knocking on the door of fame and stardom all looking for a way to break through to a bigger audience and they aren't going to charge much (if anything) to let them use there music when it could be their gateway...remember Babylon Zoo - Spaceman? never heard of before and never since all down to the power of an advert...It has happened in the US with Brit bands, T'Pau to name one, that couldn't give their stuff away and then along comes a Pepe Jeans advert and you have a Billboard chart topper.
Advertising agency types also enjoy the feeling of power and smug superiority they get from spotting unsigned talent before the record company types who should be doing this. Creating a 'buzz' around a new band can equally help the brand they're supposed to be advertising - ie the Aqualung CD being packaged as 'the music from the VW advert' etc etc.
