If you show them a few statements it should clear the matter up. You could always blank out your account number
Are you sure this is a genuine request, it could be a scam.

If you have been dealing with HMRC and you are sure it is genuine then go ahead, but nowadays you have to be so careful.

I think banks can now highlight suspicious activity on bank accounts so maybe they did it, but if so I would have thought HMRC could get the statements off them, which is why I am suspicious.
They already have your bank statements. How do you think you get your bank statements? If you don't bank with them, they have no business knowing. If you do, and they suspect you are running a business through a private account, they already have all the information on their records. If you do,and the suspect that you are also banking with another bank, they still have no need of your bank statements. A simple question whether you are are or not will suffice.

It's a scam.
Double check by phoning HMRC.

Fred, you seem to think HMRC is a bank as you say "they already have your bank statements".

It is not, it is HM Revenue and Customs.
When you have ascertained the HMRC has actually sent you that letter you must let them see your bank statements.

They won't tell you how they got the information.

Do you sell online - eBay, Amazon, something like that?
Your Bank would not have reported you to HMRC, they would have made a Money Laundering report only if unusual high activity of large amounts were going through, and this would be filtered through specialist departments in the Bank.
It sounds as if some individual may have reported you, check the phone number is genuine and give them a ring. If this is the case showing them your Bank Statements, will clear things up quickly. If you decline they will suspect you are guilty and things will probably get worse.
Obvious misread by me LOL Not HSBC but HMRC The Revenue can have bank accounts up to six years on demand and by law. They won't tell you why they think that you have a business. Send statements to an HMRC office quoting you r tax number, shown on demands and returns, and their reference number off the letter/email.
