i noticed a freepost address was simply the organisation name (an obscure one at that) no postcode or anything -so how is mail delivered there ?
And yet other freeposts now show long winded 16 letters of alphabet in 4 blocks
Is there any reason for this disparity?

The Royal Mail knows where they are - they will have registered

As to reason - pass, but I'd guess it's related to the amount they pay for the service. Pay a bit extra, get the abbreviated address.

okay thx - just wondered how does postie deliver without any form of address to go by ? -or is this type of mail delivered in another way?

Was it a pre-addressed envelope (which may have a barcode somewhere) or just an address to use for your own envelope?
IIf the latter I assume they go to a special unit that codes them and gives them coded to the postie
