What operating system are you running?

Do you have any free space to create a new partition or do you want to create a partition on an already active drive?

By free space I mean a portion of a hard drive that doesn't have a partition already.
if you use windows, i'd recommend using PartitionMagic:

makes it very easy to partition your hard drive.
i have screwed my hard drive several times when first trying to partition my hdd. be careful
If it's a fresh install, and it's Windows XP, then it will ask you if you want to create partitions, then just follow the instructions. If Win 98 use fdisk.exe. And if you already have an OS installed use Partition Magic, as already suggested.

Kerplunk, I am running Windows XP and yes i do want to create a partition on an "active" drive, is it possible or is it a little.....tricky?? Thanks everyone for replying

In that case you need to do as fo3nix suggests. You will require 3rd party software such as PartitionMagic. Very simple but the software is about 20 - 30 unless you use bit torrent or p2p, which is illegal but possible.
