or is it just a myth bandied around by my mother to get out of housework for a day? and if it really is true, what about tumble drying? what about folding already dried washing?

Bad luck to do anything in a year with a 13 in it
I worked this morning and rushed home, so no time to put washing on. Rushed home to watch footie. We didn't lose, maybe luck was on my side?
Today I did two loads of washing and also drying in the tumble dryer. I have never heard of this superstition, and as I am so old I think I would know it. However, my mother - which would take us back even further - would never wash clothes on Good Friday. She said every drop of water was a drop of blood and although I think it is utter nonsense I still do not do washing on Good Friday. When you think about it many superstitious beliefs are based in religion. Is New Year's Day a religious festival. I don't think so, but perhaps someone will prove me wrong.
I think the superstition is regional Starbuck, I have always remembered my Grandma saying it in the 50s........
Lots of strange superstitions on here for today!

Its unlucky to pass a pub on New years day without going in for a pint .
Never heard about that and have just done a load of washing which is now in the drier. Having had a run of 'unfortunate' events in the last week (puncture on M25, leaky roof and family bereavement), I don't think much more could go wrong!
I did a couple of loads as well.... I know the one about passing a pub though... its to do with ensuring a warm welcome in the rest of the year
never heard of that one.
//Is It Really Unlucky To Do Washing On New Years Day? or is it just a myth //

Superstition is nonsense so of course it's just a myth - but my mother used to say if you did the laundry on New Year's Day you would be washing all year - which you would be anyway - so whichever way you look at it, it makes little sense. :o)
Never heard of that, I did a load of washing yesterday. When I first married the next door neighbours said it wasn't right to do washing on Sundays, I sometimes did if it rained on Saturdays. I told her that I worked full-time it was the only time that suited me to do it.
and someone would probably died in the days of larger and extended families so it was likely to seem true...

How about the not drinking the last dram from a bottle of scotch until you start the next.. that was a friends dad's one... I think it was an excuse to buy more scotch
Ha ha! Sounds like it Rowan! :o)
"Don’t wash clothes on New Year’s Day, or someone dear will pass away" is probably the saying that your mum is thinking of. Personally I think that's a load of b*****ks.

Having said that, I don't do washing on New Years Day, but that's only because I've usually got a stinking hangover.
