We had a power cut yesterday for a couple of hours. My computer, (Dell Dimension 5000) was switched off during that time, but not switched off at the wall. Today there seemed to be no power to it. I changed the plug and the fuse. Still no little green light. Any ideas what I could try? Many thanks in anticipation. All the other bits have power, printer, monitor, scanner.

was it protected with an anti surge power spike protector?...Quite a few years go I bought an all singing all dancing Dell for the family , Christmas eve we had a massive thunderstorm and our tv aerial got hit , to say the least the Dell was dead but went back to them as not working ... must admit I have a run an anti surge ever since ...... You could try the fuse in the plug ? and make sure the connectors are in firmly as a first off check ....
Sorry if it sounds obvious, but have you tried a different socket? One that you know works.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I have tried other sockets and tried other things in same socket. Sockets are fine. I have changed the plug and the fuse.
I did not have an anti surge device.

Rang Dell. Asked me to enter a mail box address. No idea what that is. So then they asked (automated) me to press O. That's O not zero. So pressed the 6 key. No they didn't like that so had to ring off.
You could try replacing the power lead tenrec, but I fear the Dell is fried.

I had the same thing happen to my PC just a few days ago, a new PSU sorted it out, cost me about £35 fitted.
I had the same problem, cured the same as Ratter.

Thanks very much for those replies. I went into a shop in town and they said the same. So will take it in next Wednesday for repair.
I doubt that you'll get much help from Dell on the Telephone;unless you have your Debit/Credit card at hand. A few years ago I contacted the firm because I was unable to load a programme (Encyclopaedia Britannica ) and I was informed that I needed to put money 'up front' before they could assist me. I declined their offer and, I think, got my answer from AB.( Disc was only suitable for an earlier edition of Windows.)

It's my opinion that possibly your Comp has been subjected to a Power surge and may even be a 'write-off'; as happened to me when Lightening struck my house. ( Hence the reason for my having an out-dated EB disc)

If you have Household Insurance, it is possible that, as was my case, you can claim to have the equipment replaced; or as I did, settle for a cash sum to buy whatever one chooses.

vivandron, thank you for that information. I hadn't thought of claiming on my insurance. Although I guess if I did that my premiums would be increased.
Hi tenrec....My premium was not increased beyond normal annual cost of index and my full claim involved a TV; Video/DVD Player; Beside clock Radio; Desktop Comp; Laptop; and minor Damage to Building. My error was that I settled the claim very quickly before realising that my occasionally used electronic music keyboard had also been damaged.

Check now that you do not have any other electrical items which could have been damaged by a possible surge in electric current.

Best of luck....Ron.

Thanks Ron, everything else is ok.
Tenrec ............. it might be worth having a look inside the power supply. There might be a fuse in there.

Thank you Mr Builder, I've just managed to get the tower out from the crack between the filing cabinet and my desk. I'll look tomorrow.
