I thoroughly get (I think) all of this crossword except, and probably vitally, completing the blanked off area for which I have a couple of equally appropriate words. There seems to be no way to verify which is correct. Anyone else having this problem or is it blindingly obvious?

There is a blanked off area with 4 cell to be filled with the theme word. You are required to black out 3 cells at the bottom of the grid.

Ignore last communication, have 3 squares to be blacked out........4 squares at the top. Am losing the plot!
