Headphones for iPhone 3GS

I bought new Maxell headphones for my iPhone clearly stating that it "can be used for iPhones" but when I use it the music sounds so dim ? why is this ? I have had many problems with headphones in the past when I use them with iPhone ? Whats going on ?

Depending on your settings, sometimes the iPhone/iPod volume gets automatically reduced as you plug in headphones.
Have a tinker around in the Settings menu, it may help.

I have tried, but cant find a setting for sound

in settings go to "ipod" see if your volume limit is set right or turn it off
thats if its "on"

There is no option for iPod in settings ?
What's the sound like with the apple headphones? Also, silly I know, but are the headphones plugged in completely, mine doesn't sound right if they're not.

Its just so strange, I got a Sony pair of headphones, they worke fine, but I just got a Maxell pair and the sound is really dim ? I have never used an Apple headphone ? They plug in nicely too..
