My brother and his wife are having a baby in March. He earns 14,00 and she earns 14,500. When the baby is born she would like to go back to work pasrt time. Their combined earnings would then be approx. 22,000. What could they claim in working family tax credits? I have tried to go on line but the form is quite complicated and I just wondered if anyone had a rough idea. I did have a chart with all the details on but I have lost it. Thanks a lot.

If she works part time she may be under the 30 hour minimum required before you get Working Tax Credit, and the family as a whole may be over the total income limit anyway. However, they should be entitled to Children's Tax Credit. The form isn't that difficult, honestly! If you don't know the exact details, just estimate (eg birthdates)

On 22k they will get about 21 p/w

but if only the husband works(30+hrs) and earns 14k they will get about 66 p/w.

(Obviously these figures should be double checked but in my experience they are only ever a few pence out.)
