/// A clearly-unhappy Mr Cameron said he did not like what the presenter was doing, and warned he was fuelling a ‘witch hunt'. He said: 'There is a danger if we are not careful, that this can turn into a sort of witch-hunt, particularly against people who are gay. ///

Also does it really matter if some of the suspects might happen to be gay?

Along with others who may also remember, I can recall explaining to someone not too far from here that, contrary to his then belief, all gays are most certainly not paedophiles. Ignorance has a lot to answer for.
What a stupid irresponsible person Philip Schofield is, whoever would hand a list of names to the PM without first investigating is an idiot. What did he expect the PM to do? I think Cameron handled it very well. Why pick on gays? Paedophiles are disgusting people who need castrating imo, but all suspects have to be investigated first before making serious allegations about them.
//What did he expect the PM to do?//

I think he expected the PM to have it investigated - without revealing the names.
More trial by media.

Scholfield is a clot and is just courting sensational air time. For once Cameron handled himself well.

AOG, I have a dog with a docked tail - Boxer and I can assure you I am a dog lover. You can still get dogs with docked tails from Ireland anyway if you really want one it is just pathetic interfering in this country yet again.

/// Perhaps we need a Sheepdog to round this thread up and get it back on track....? ///

Brilliant Jack, but that does surprise me a little, you couldn't possibly be agreeing with me when I repeatedly claim that there are quite a number of 'sheep' on this site?

I am fully aware of the the need for some 'working dogs' to be exempt from this legislation, due to the manner of jobs they are employed in doing, and this although unfortunate has to be accepted.

But anyone who buys a dog from a breeder who has had dogs docked for cosmetic reasons, must also be in a sense condoning this brutal disfigurement of an animal.

I think once again some are taking my words far too serious, haven't some the sense and reasoning to work things out for themselves, without the need for insults.

Oh yes Witch Hunt can bring visions of rounding people up without any evidence, trial by the mob, and burnings at the stake, but didn't anyone notice that my words Witch Hunt were encased in apostrophes?

Yes I know 'Witch Hunt' and 'Rocks upturned' maybe rather dramatic descriptions, but anyone who is prepared to enter into an honest debate rather than try to belittle a person, would be able to read into the real meaning of the thread.
Not sure I'm understanding you there, AOG. When you said this ....

//If a 'witch hunt' managers to lift one or two rocks and some vermin comes scurrying out, then that can't be a bad thing surely?

Better to go out hunting them, than allowing them to carry on with their vile actions unchallenged. //

....didn't you mean it?
I'd suspect the issue in that sentence is more to do with the word "particularly" rather than the word "gay". The issue being that one particular group would be unduly targeted.

At last a sensible answer I refer of course to this one posted by Duncer

/// Why would they be? The sexuality of the guilty is irrelevant - they must be pursued. The welfare and protection of children must take precendence over the supposed potential for anti-gay feeling. As we are now more accepting as a society then why should we let this hinder a genuine investigation, and it does gay men a disservice to suggest the reported/alleged homosexuality of a paedophile should hinder an investigation. I'm sure all innocent gay men will be in full support of the investigation. ///

The 'GAY' smoke screen, seems to have worked so as to take the public concern away from the misdoings amongst those in high places, by frightening persons into believing that the gay community may be in danger of being 'Witch Hunted'.

First let me edit my misspelling of the word manages, before the 'spelling detectives' get on my case.

Would it help you any better if I also replaced the words 'witch hunt' with the words 'an investigation', also the words 'hunting them' with the words 'Investigating them'?

Would that be more acceptable, to the more sensitive amongst us?
Well- yes of course, AoG.

No one can object to the idea that allegations of such a serious nature are to be investigated by the properly constituted authorities - and that is the job of the police, and separately the official inquiries that have been set up to lok into this very thing.(Although you could have a discussion about the sheer number of inquiries)

The problem with your OP was that it appeared you were advocating and supporting as a good thing the idea of a witch -hunt, which is actually a very bad thing, because it creates a poisonous climate of hysteria, fear, gossip, slander, rumour and allegations - mostly without any evidence to support it. This clouds the issue and can delay or even pervert the course of justice.

Had your OP called for investigation, I doubt anyone would have demurred. Would have been a significantly shorter thread though :)

That is why I have been banging my head against the wall because so many on this site, cannot understand a simple 'play on words'.

Or perhaps they did, but took the other more confrontational course, which was to have yet another jolly good old dig at AOG again.
<cannot understand a simple 'play on words'>

at the risk of stating the blindingly obvious, this site involves the exchange of written words. So if intelligent debate is really your aim it would be helpful not to dodge, twist or use the wrong ones.

If your explanation is that

when you wrote witch hunt you really meant investigation',
when you wrote 'hunting them' you really meant 'Investigating them'?

i think you'll find that isn't <word play>

It would be best described as using the wrong words
or using the right words with an intention you now wish to deny
