Slow computer

When I click on a 'latest post' it takes about 15-25 seconds before it comes up and then another 10-15 seconds before I can type and post answer. I find this frustrating. About 4 or 5 times along the bottom of the screen it says 'waiting for http//: .........' and the box with the green vertical bars fills up. Only when this is all finished can I proceed.
Can anyone offer suggestions to speed the process up - I have run defragment.
Is it perhaps that we just don't have superfast broadband in this part of the country.
I am very grateful for any replies/suggestions etc.

For what it's worth, wardlaw, I have the same problem, but not all the time, and I don't know what to do about it, either. I'll try methyl's suggestion, in the meantime.
