Were you aware that from tomorrow the government is putting VAT on spit-roasted chickens - they sneaked that one in didn't they? We often buy one for quickness from Tescos, great to eat after a weary shopping trip, but probably not so often now :(

Hot take away food such as fish and chips has been VAT rated for years.

Before VAT we had Purchase Tax and that was worse in some ways.

VAT on fuel is at 5%, unless you're in business when it is 20%. My energy bills have really dropped since I closed the business, that is mainly down to the VAT.
