Normally put TV onto channel 6 to view Sky - it now will not work.

Also, Sky+ box will not come out of standby mode.

Can anyone advise a technophobe how to fix this problem for her elderly mum please?

Thanks in anticipation.

With the Sky+ box, it could be as simple as pressing the Sky button on the top of the remote - sometimes, if the wrong button gets pressed then it can switch off the remote's ability to contol the box. Alternatively, you might have to for the tried-and-tested switch it off and wait a couple of minutes.

With the TV, it could be that the Sky channel has gone on to one of the others (My TV is Hitachi [Although I have an HD box] and Sky comes through on the HDMI channel. There is also options for TV, DTV (Freeview), EXT-1. There is a <source> button on the remote and you can go through all of these options. My Mother's TV has an <av> button and her Sky channel is EXT-1. Perhaps the TV in the problem has something like this to look for.

Hope I've helped. Good luck with it.
Switch it off at the mains and wait 30 seconds. Then switch the power on again. You will need to wait about a minute while the unit re-boots.

This usually works if the box has not failed completely.

Best of luck

Hello Judge Nutmeg, thanks so much for your detailed and timely response.

I've checked through EXT1, EXT2 etc, but nothing doing anywhere, just all plain blue screens. But then again, if the Sky box is not working, I don't suppose I would see anything anyway would I ?!? I think we'll have to call someone in who knows what they're doing lol - thanks again xx

Hi Batman - have tried turning off at the mains etc having phoned Sky as well just now. Red light remains so it sounds like the box has had it ...!

Thanks so much for your answer xx
If all else fails and the box won’t come out of standby, there is one last resort that will reformat the hard drive and lose all your recorded programmes, but this has worked for me a couple of times. Note you need to press the buttons on the box itself, not the remote.

1) Switch off the box at the mains
2) Whilst holding down the left and right arrows on the front of the box (either side of the Select switch), power on the box. After a second or two, the Sky 'ring' will light.
3) hit the 'Select' button on the front panel - this will reformat the drive and reset the box. This can take a few minutes and the ring will 'whirl' backwards to show it's working.

Hi Hammer, thanks to you also for your reply - funnily enough, I found your solution after a bit of digging but it did not work unfortunately.

However, following an engineer's visit, my mum now has a shiny new HD box and is very pleased ... :-)
