I am looking for Robert Goodlass (b.1841)in the1911 census. I can't find his wife Margaret either which suggests to me it has been entered wrongly. Robert's son (my grandad was entered under Goodland in the 1901 census). Their children will probably have left home by then, as Margaret, the youngest was 14 in the 1901census.
Robert's birthplace was Hull and Margaret's in Cullen, Banff. They married in Mile End in London in 1869. (can't say they didn't get around!).

There is a story in the family that Margaret threw Robert out for his philandering, but he must have been getting on abit as he is 59 in the 1901 census!!

Thanks.

Robert was a sailmaker. He also lived in Cullen and Preston before moving to Toxteth Park in Liverpool. He is living with Margaret and the two youngest children there in 1901 so I would imagine he would have died there.
sorry just worked out they lived in toxteth, there's a george living in toxteth and i think ancestry have transcribed his birth incorrectly, he's 35 and possibly born Banff? living 73 Caryl Street, Toxteth actually just traced him back an he was the older son of robert and margaret, found charles henry in toxteth in 1911 too,
he died in 1919

Robert and Maggie had 8 children and they are the source of all the Goodlasses coming from the Liverpool area. George is my grandad's brother, and I keep in touch with his grandaughter who lives in the US. She doesn't know where he is in 1911 either. I have found a death for Robert on FMP in 1919. I will send away for the certificate and hope that Maggie is still alive and registered it.

Thanks Dotty!
I would be inclined to do a district by district search of the toxteth 1911, it will take a while and using the summary books would be quicker but they only list the head of house and he could have been in an institution or workhouse even,
is there a harriett louisa goodlass married to one of the sons? born hull and aged 36 , married 10 years with no children but she is living on her own in bolton.

He's the grandson of my Dad's eldest brother John who was born in 1901(Dad was the youngest born in 1919).
I will have to look under the address from 1901 census and see if Robert is still living there. They all stayed in Toxteth until our generation who are all over the world. Some have changed their name through marriage.

Robert's father, John Goodlass moved to Grimsby in Lincs when Robert moved to London. All the Liverpool Goodlasses are descended from Robert.
I've checked the 1901 address in the 1911 census and they weren't living there.
If Robert was liviing in Toxteth or Toxteth Park district in 1911 his name must have been mis-transcribed by ancestry and FMP aswell if that is the site craft has used I wondered if he was maybe in hospital, his death was registered in toxteth park and the certificate could give a home address as well as the name of the person registering it.
found maragaret davidson on the 1911 at 36, Carrington Street, Liverpool (Toxteth Park ) with daughter Maragaret Goodlass aged 24, Margaret Davidson is married 38 years, 8 children, 5 living, 3 dead, born cullen banffshire scotland, no sign of robert and the boarder joseph brown aged 24 has signed the return at the bottom.
Google Elgin Library Local Heritage - at one point parts of Banffshire were in Moray.

There is a facility to search soe of their records online.
I'm looking at the marriages of the Goodlass children and Margaret Ann married Samuel Watkin in March 1913 and her father is still alive then and her address is given as 14 Carrington Rd. I've checked number 14 in 1911 and no Goodlass there. I've checked the Toxteth Workhouse for Robert in 1911 and he's not there either.
I've looked at every household in the Toxteth East sub-district and all hospitals and institutions in Toxteth East and Toxteth South West on the actual filmed returns and he is not there, so there has been no indexing error but there are 2 more Toxteth districts yet to go through, if he was in Toxteth he should turn up on either of those but he could've been anywhere i guess. I'm at work tl 8pm and so won't get to do any more today but if someone else wants to try looking through those to films frame by frame it does eliminate any indexing error. his name may have been badly written and so mis-read or his information may have been given wrongly as i don't believe he was a head of house in 1911. i also know there are several institutions he could have been in and they will need a close search rather than just an index search.

Thanks Dotty! I have just read your replies and am about to go out, but I remember some things my Dad told me about his Dad who was Robert's son.
He told me that His Dad (John William) used to go with his Dad (Robert) when he sailed fishing smacks out of Preston (Lancs). I am wondering if he could be there, or he could be at sea.
I have a lot of this in my tree as all my Mum's family worked on the transatlantic liners and are often missing on the census with the wives just putting their names down as 'wife' and no 'head' of family.

It looks as though the rumours are true and that in the 1911 census, Robert has been thrown out my Margaret and he is living somewhere else. When I am back later, I will see what I can find.
Many thanks fr your help.
