Max Bygraves told this story on the stage at the Theatre Royal many years ago.
"My uncle used to own a second hand clothes shop with unpriced suits hanging outside for customers to look at.
An assistant with an obvious hearing aid would stand outside and when a customer asked for the price of a suit the assistant would call out "Dad, how much is this grey pin striped suit".
The reply came "THIRTY POUNDS"
The assistant, who was pretending to be deaf would say "THIRTEEN POUNDS"
The customer, thinking that he had got a bargain would pay up quickly and be off.
Max said that his uncle had only paid a pound or two for it.

RIP Max.
So, what you are saying is, in essence, he was a con man?

No, Duncer. Max Bygraves was not a con man.
I am sure that he story told by Max Bygraves was not a true one about his family. It was just a story to entertain and amuse the audience in the theatre.
Just as my comments were facetious and no resemblance whatsoever to my opinion on the inestimable Max Bygraves.
I used to fancy him, but it was about 44yrs ago!
I fancied him because of his Rolls Royce and his big house in Bournemouth, neti.
it quite probably is true, or at least it would have been something a young lad from rotherhithe would witness! He's from a large family of working class londoners with large families and small houses who worked long hours for very little. The boy done good.
askyourgran, I wasn't so mercenary, I just fancied him!
My Mum fancied him Neti. I was far too young to fancy him ;o)
Lottie, I was about 8 !!
