i rang docs yesterday as feeding was getting very stressfull for me and for her... she would just scream and throw herself about as soon as i would sit her up to wind her.... now that ive changed to comfort milk which was last week doc said to try her back on gaviscon but it wouldnt come through the holes of the teat... i thought gaviscon was meant to thicken in t stomach not the bottle??..... anyway she was getting so frustrated at not getting the milk out quick enough which now makes me think she probably just need a bigger teat in the first place..... luckily i ha just bought a variflow teat last week so tried her with that and she got on loads better so tried it without the gaviscon and was way too fast for her.....

do i carry onb with gaviscon in th hope itdosent make her constipated.... i just dont want to be messing with her also a friend of mine has had reflux for aslong as i can remember and is really ill now and its caused her all sorts of problems and is now classed as disabled she can hardly talk and struggles to eat and drink, i dont want that to happen to my baby

If she doesn't need the Gaviscon, don't give it to her - you need to discuss this with your health visitor.
Screaming mid feed isn't a usual symptom of reflux, usually that happens before hand
Try feeding her and only 'winding' at the end of the bottle - babies dont actually need winding, they can do it themselves. Not sure how hitting anyone on the back can bring up a burp myself .......
Use a method and stick to it or you will never find out which one it is that's working or not working
Gaviscon and comfort milk together are not normal needed, use normal baby milk and gaviscon not the both together
What formula do you use normally?

i was using normal sma with gaviscon but it made her so constipated so took her off it although itdid wrk and stop the sicking up.... so i changed to comfort milk last week and she has started with the screaming so im wonderin now if the screaming is cos she isnt getting the milk through the slow 2 hole teat quick enough as the milk must be slightly thicker... doc told me to ry her with the gaviscon again with the comfort milk tho

on the comfort she till sicks up but maybe only once or twice a day where as before on normal sma it was every feed...

i see heath visior today but she dont tell me much as ive been having probs with her from day 1
Have you spoken to a doctor about the problem?
My daughter had reflux as a baby... I had to put gaviston powders in her milk, I used Cow and Gate. Comfort milk and that milk for hungrier babies is not good, it does make babies constipated. I don't know if the gaviscon even helped. My daughter was always being sick, she would bring the whole bottle back up! No one ever wanted to hold her. I was told that after each bottle I should keep her sitting up for about 15 minutes, but this was not always possible if she was sleepy. A dummy is good too, as the sucking keeps saliva moving and swallowing action helps with the reflux. She did eventually grow out of it xx
My daughter puked loads but as I breast fed I never knew how much she bringing up. The doctor advised me to wait until she was on solids (it was 3 months back then) before he looked into it. She stopped once she went on solids.
have you seen your health visitor today ? they are usually the experts with advice re feeding, is your baby gaining weight ?
the reflux that babies commonly suffer and the reflux adults suffer aren't really the same. Babies usually grow out of their reflux by a year old. I absolutely agree with the person who said stick to one thing rather than chopping and changing. Is she putting on weight? The health professionals don't tend to get worried too much unless they are failing to thrive or unless they are projectile vomiting most of the time (although that's not all that helpful when you are sitting covered in sick i know).
As some hope for the future, as you know because i said before, it sounded so familiar except my baby is 18 weeks old. In the last 2 weeks she has began to get better and now just possets rather than voms. She is also taking much more at a time and only needing winding twice during a feed (rather than every 30 mls)
If you are using thickened milk, you need a single hole fast flow teat (we use avent) i found the variflow still wasn't really big enough for the staydown milk so we got a size 4 teat for it.
Is this your first baby honey?

yes my first baby so you can imagine how its affecting us all.... and if one more person says speak to health visitor im gonna scraem lol..... she knows ive had probs from the start and now baby is going every 4hrs sometimes 5 she is only having 5-6 feeds in 24hrs instead of 7.... health visitor today said to try lactose free milk and make her have an extra feed?????? i mean what the hell im struggling with her feeds and shes telling me make her have more ggrrrr... she was eighed today and 8lb 11oz she is 11 weeks 2moro but bear in mind she was 3 weeks early they say she is gaining slowy.... i tried the medium flow teat this afternoon without the gaviscon and she screamed and cried after 40ml but after she calmed down on her change mat foir few mins she managed to take 120ml.. so its not the teat being slow like i thought so back to drawing board.... i called in chemist and they said to keep her with gaviscon for few days and if not happy get to c a doc.... doc appointments are 1-2 wek wait
honey....I thought that we had agreed last week......comfort milk with or without Gaviscon as needed. Orange juice for constipation as needed.

Stick to the plan.

orange juice at 9 weeks old? I usually whole heartedly concur with everything you say Sqad, but that is ridiculous!

That 'advice' went out with the ark and I disagree with you vehemently

You are entitled to your opinion and i respect that.

ojread... sqad is right about orange juice as health visitor told me to give her it in 10parts cooled boiled water... i only gave her 15ml once a day for 2 days and it worked a treat
Question Author
well since last night i gave her gaviscon 3 times.... 2 ina row and one i missed and already her poos are hardening and poor thing is screaming just to pass a small stone sized poo... getting bloody stupid this is
honey.........stick with it and introduce the diluted orange juice for the constipation guided by the state of the stools.
Oh no, I know how stressful it can be. My daughter was on Gaviscon as baby. She had colic and reflux. We had to take her to A&E when she was 6 weeks old as she was absolutely screaming and projectile vomiting. They did an x ray and blood tests but prescribed that. We used SMA formula and also used colief drops. I would definitely recommend the drops, you can get them on prescription. Some people also swear by the Dr Brown bottles so maybe they could be worth a try.

Keep on to the health visitor or your GP if she's still no better. If it's really bad, you could ask to be referred to a Paediatrician as they can prescribe medication if need be (only as a last resort though).

It's such a relief when you get them sorted as you can start to enjoy your baby then. Thinking of you.
does your HV still come to you? I go to the clinic at the childrens centre and you can see different ones
