I read a novel about 20 years ago set in Switzerland in the middle ages about a young man who is a genius and builds an elaborate clock.

It came out in the 80's or early 90's- that's all I can remember. I'll be grateful for any ideas.

Thanks woofgang-I've tried abebooks and barnes & noble but no luck so far
Only thing I can find (apart from your questions on abe and B&N) is a book called Captives of Time by Malcolm Joseph Bosse; have a feeling that's not it though. What sort of audience would it have been aimed at? Will keep trawling.
I think these are set in the right time period and country

"Mountains Are Free" by Julie Davis Adams
"The Apple and the Arrow" by Mary and Conrad Buff

There are more here for you to have a look through http://en.wikipedia.o...ls+set+in+switzerland
try asking a fiction specialist in your local public library. They have lists and indexes of things like this

Thanks all- I've been away for a couple of days. I'll try your suggestions

hi sophie- it was historical with a fantasy element but not aimed at pure fantasy readers
OK; will have a look every now and then; was it a grown up or teenagey type one?
Question Author
Thanks Sophie- it was an adult novel
Still searching every now and then; know how frustrating it is to 'lose' a book! The best things I've come up with are Longitude by Dava Sobel and The Clockwork Three by Matthew J Kirby but the first seems too historical with no fantasy and the second is I think, a children's book.
