This Oz family only use 6 litres a day, quite good the way they do it.

No need to go mad saving water, just be sensible.

Unless you have a big family, wash your cars fanatically and fill a large paddling pool frequently, you will probably save.

Found it rocky. Chris says he pays £3/month and he is in credit with that. Start at the penultimate post on page 1 and he posts a couple of times after that. All informative.

LadyBirder, I used to be concerned about the quantity of water being wasted while waiting for the running water (from the tank in the loft) to get hot enough to wash with, so I now used the electric shower head (which is over the bath next to the wash basin) and you get all the hot water you want very quickly without wasting any.
Wak thanks but my problem is in the kitchen, not the bathroom.
Another simple way to cut down water use by the loo cistern is to cut the top half off a square shaped plastic bottle and put the bottom part upright in a corner of the cistern. Water remains in it when the cistern is flushed and so saved. Used it for years before the hippo became available
Just thought you might be interested in an idea i use. The water that is collected in bottles from "waiting for the heat" is used to soak dirty dishes that I wont wash straight away. Eg when dishing up a meal, i empty the saucepan and then put some soaking water in. it saves loads of scrubbing when i wash up later. I used to use it to soak nappies but dont need to do that any more. Our bill changed from £40 per month to £25 when we went on the meter (family of 4).
At the moment, we pay £9 a month for our incoming fresh water - there is a separate monthly charge of £12 on top of that for our outgoing drains and foul water, but it's still a great deal less than we used to pay before we had the meter.
I put a washing up bowl in the sink so use less water than filling the sink up.
I get a bill every 6 months.
