My 18 year old son has recently passed his driving test and to put him on my insurance is going to cost approximately £3000. However if he gets good enough A level grades he will be going away to university in September and my question is, if I cancel his insurance, how much should I expect to get back?

You need to check with the insurance company. There may be a cancellation fee or a fee for taking him off the policy. You could ask whether you can add him as a temporary additional driver for just 3 months

Thanks for your swift reply factor30. I did ask the insurance company what the cancellation fee might be, but they were reluctant to give me an answer as I hadn't actually put him on the policy yet. I will give them a call and check to see if I can get him on for the 3 months. Thanks again x
Cancellation fees can be substantial- for example if you cancel 25% of the way through (ie after 3 months) you may find you don't get anything like 75% back- it may be nearer 65%
Swinton have sorted me out for my son who is at university. Admittedly it is on a basic Fiesta, and I don't know what car you have.

He isn't a named driver, but can be added as an additional driver for up to 90 days per year.

Each session must be for a minimum of ten days at a time, and it works out quite reasonably. A ten day period costs just over £50, or £5 a day.

Longer periods cost less per day, as there are fixed charges per session as well as a daily charge, so short periods are more expensive.

90 days per year is a quarter of a year, which is OK if he is away at Uni a lot.

Give your local Swinton branch a ring and see what they can do.

Thank you both so much for your advice. That's what I thought factor30 - the lady I'd previously talked to from AXA ( our insurers) was very cagey about how much the cancellation fee would be and I immediately expected it to be very high. Hopkirk that's great to know - I wasn't aware that you could insure for 90 day periods without it being really expensive, I will definitely call Swintons. Thanks again folks x
