I have a beetle, registered 1973, i have been told that if i can get proof that it was made in 1972, that i can claim it to be historic and not pay road tax! If this is true, how can i get this information and then how do i proceed to inform the DVLA?

any help would be greatly appreciated

It should have a chassis/VIN number which was allocated to it when new by the manufacturer - this should confirm its year of build rather than year of registration.
The 10th character in the VIN should be the one that tells you the date it was made.
