Suspected broken hip in cat

Had to rush my 19 year old boy to the vets this morning. He was dragging his rear leg around. Vet is reluctant to do an x ray because that requires anaesthesia so for now we are treating it as a soft tissue injury with pain relief and confinement (vet's advice). if no better by Monday we will have to think again. He's a really fit and healthy cat so if he is no better, I want him x rayed to see if they can fix it. Does anyone know what the pronosis is for mending broken hips in old boys? Obviously I shall talk to the vet on monday, but I am going to worry about him all weekend. If he was a poorly cat or showing signs of age, I make take a different view, but he has so much life in him I am finding it quite difficult to compute what I think the vet was hinting at.

Hope he gets through this quickly.....
Thanks barmaid for replying, loads of fish in oils will bring down the constipation, if not you can give cod liver oil capsules, hope you see improvement soon, I lost my 20 year old cat last year a blockage in her small intestines and understand what it is like I did send her to surgery as the vet said she was strong enough, sadly she had a mass in her small intestines, but I dont regret sending her to surgery and the vets said that she was in no pain.... but like you I was torn between the devil and the deep blue see......if you get my drift, she had a great life. good luck x
Sounds like things are on the up, anyone heard from Prudie?
A Cat Prayer (adapted by theApotheosic Bard)

Although I am too proud to beg,
And may appear to be a very independent creature,
I ask for Prudie's loving care and attention.
I rely on Prudie for my well being much more than you may realise.
This I promise you, my benefactor, that I will not be a burden on you
Nor will I demand more of you than you care to give,
Even if it is more than four hundred and fifty quid
I will be a quiet peaceful island of serenity for you, Prudie, to gaze upon;
A soft soothing body to caress,
And I shall purr with pleasure to rest your weary ears.

Since I am a gourmet who appreciates different taste sensations,
I know you give me a variety of nutritious foods and fresh water daily.
You know dear friend, how I love to go.
Allow me, I pray, a warm sheltered place
Where I can rest peacefully and feel secure.
If, like now, I am wounded in battle or suffering from disease,
Please tend me gently, and see that I am treated
By loving and competent hands.
Please protect me from the inhuman humans
Who would hurt and torture me for their own amusement.

I am accustomed to Prudie's gentle touch and am not always suspicious
Nor swift enough to avoid such malicious acts.
Now in my later years when my senses fail me
And my infirmities could become too great to bear,
Allow me the comfort and dignity that I desire for my closing days
And help me gently in my pain or passing.

Hear this prayer, my dear Prudie, my fate depends on you.
Poor little chap but fingers crossed. I tore the ligaments in my right knee and it took months and lots of pain before it got better but I was younger than him. Did he do it skiing like I did?:-)
Cracking up but I realise its both of you with troubles....so excuse me

Good luck to your old fellow, too, Barmaid, fingers crossed he improves sufficiently - he'll enjoy being back at home, and pampered!
I tore the ligaments in my knee on boxing day 1999 at 6am in the morning whilst walking my hound on what turned out to be black ice. I lay on the ground cursing for some time. The dog just stood there - no attempt to go for help or a shot of brandy.

It hurt very very much and took months to sort itself out. Puss has my sympathy. What is his name? ASBO snr?
thanks for the update barmaid hopefully cage rest will do the trick , but if thw worst happens he will manage fine on 3 legs ,issy had to have 1 of hers removed after a rta i was more upset then her , she still manages to catch a mouse and bring it in alive let it go in the liunge then sit on the back of the sofa and watch ME trying to catch it

lol, thanks DT. That made me laugh. And thank you everyone for you lovely messages. Let's just hope Prudie has some good news tomorrow.

His name is "The Terminator" (Arnie!). Thankfully he is no longer constipated. Although I feel ever so slightly sick now............ (TMI, I appreciate!).

DT, I didn't mean your poem made me laugh I meant the "more than 450 quid" bit did. The poem itself was very touching.
Wow I hadn't seen our poems, very very thoughtful DT to go that effort XX
Won't say anymore as I don't want to think about it.
No problem ,both of you, and I hope all works out well.....the 450 was tongue in cheek and I bet Prudie ends up with even more,(sorry Prudie), but then they are worth it, be they feline or canine.

I am more to the latter but my mater's cat has taken to me for scratches, behind her head, on her ears, or even frotting up against my hand over the armchair, she of course controlling the pace of her "massage." Now her dog is a little aggressive b - possibly being protective....
Any updates, Girls, on the conditions of your feline friends???
