I am thinking of having a short break in the USA for the main purpose of going on a train journey.

Which routes would you reccommend for spectacular scenery and quality of destinations? Currently toying with idea of Chicago to either Los Angeles or Seattle.

If you have the time, take a coast to coast train ride that is about 3-7 days. A short trip would be a train along the West coast that usually goes from Washington to California along the coast, inland through the farming and beautiful redwood trees. Heres the main train company's website. Hope that helps

"california zephyr" from chicago to san francisco would be a good trip as the best part of the journey, denver to SLC is done in the daylight. lovbooks suggestion of "coast starlight" is also a good trip, with San Francisco (Oakland) to LA in the daylight.
